Role Description
The Medical Coder III is an advanced-level coding role performing professional and institutional coding for:

Complex outpatient specialty services
-
Surgical encounters
-
Emergency department and observation services
-
Inpatient hospital records
This position also serves as a subject matter expert, mentoring junior coders while ensuring high productivity, accuracy, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
-
Conduct advanced review of medical documentation for coding accuracy and compliance
-
Assign accurate codes including:
-
Evaluation & Management (E&M)
-
CPT and HCPCS (complex modifiers and units)
-
ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS for institutional and inpatient services
-

Utilize MHS GENESIS to access patient records remotely
-
Meet or exceed advanced productivity standards while maintaining 97%+ coding accuracy
-
Provide mentorship and guidance to Medical Coder I & II staff
-
Stay updated with coding guidelines, payer rules, and DHA/MHS policies
Required Qualifications
-
Associate’s degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or biological sciences, OR
-
University certificate in Medical Coding, OR
-
Completion of an advanced medical training program under professional supervision (U.S. Armed Forces or U.S. Maritime Service)
Required Certifications (AAPC / AHIMA)
Professional Coding Certifications: CPC, RHIA, RHIT, CCS-P
Evaluation & Management Certifications: CEMC, CEMA
Institutional Coding Certifications (Advanced Preferred): CIC, COC, CCS
Experience Requirements

Minimum 4 years of medical coding experience

Experience with complex outpatient specialty, surgical, emergency, observation, and inpatient coding

DoD or Veterans Administration coding experience (preferred)

MHS GENESIS experience (strongly preferred)
