📍 Residency Requirement
Candidates must be legal residents of Tompkins County or one of the six adjoining counties for at least one month prior to application, and must maintain residency:

For civil service examinations, eligible lists are created based on exam scores regardless of residency, but preference may be given to municipal residents.
🎓 Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet one of the following:

High school diploma or GED, OR
-
Four years of full-time (or equivalent part-time/volunteer) experience working with students, OR
-
Any combination of education and experience equal to the above
⚠️ Special Requirements (At Time of Appointment)
Candidates must:

Be at least 19 years of age

Pass a physical performance test, including:

Climbing and descending bus steps
-
Emergency evacuation of 125 lbs of dead weight

Exiting through an emergency door quickly

Complete 3 hours of NYSED pre-service instruction

Participate in all required training programs

Re-qualify on the physical performance test every two years

Maintain CPR and First Aid certification when required by a student’s IEP

🚌 Job Responsibilities
As a School Bus Attendant, you assist the bus driver in ensuring the safe transportation of students, including those with special needs.
Typical Duties Include:

Assisting students with boarding, seating, securing, and exiting the bus

Following Individual Education Plans (IEPs)

Administering CPR and First Aid when required
-
Maintaining discipline and student safety
-
Keeping accurate written records of student activity

Ensuring confidentiality of student information

Supporting emergency evacuation procedures
