About the Role
As an Automation Engineer, you will design, deploy, and sustain cloud-native infrastructure using AWS and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) methodologies. You will act as a subject matter expert, leading automation initiatives, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring repeatable, secure, and efficient IT system delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Automation: Design and maintain repeatable infrastructure deployments using CloudFormation or Terraform.
Pipeline Management: Build and manage CI/CD pipelines for automated testing, deployment, and rollback using GitLab CI and AWS CodePipeline.
Cloud Operations: Implement monitoring, logging, and diagnostics with CloudWatch, AWS Config, and Splunk to resolve complex infrastructure issues.
Integration: Facilitate integration of AWS cloud services with on-premises and hybrid environments.
Collaboration & Leadership: Work with cross-functional teams and mentor junior engineers in automation initiatives.
Technical Documentation: Produce detailed documentation for architecture decisions, automation processes, and compliance artifacts.
Technical Skills & Expertise
Cloud Platforms: AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda, IAM, VPC, RDS)
Infrastructure as Code (IaC): CloudFormation, Terraform
Scripting & Development: Python, Bash, PowerShell; AWS SDKs & CLI
Networking: VPC peering, Transit Gateway, Route 53, VPNs, firewall management
Configuration Management: Ansible, AWS Systems Manager
Containers (Preferred): Docker, ECS, EKS, Kubernetes
Compliance & Security
Knowledge of FISMA and NIST 800-53 standards
Implement IAM policies, encryption, logging, and monitoring
Mitigate risks to meet evolving government requirements
Strict adherence to federal security protocols and identity management
Qualifications
Active Top Secret Level Clearance
Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Computer Engineering or Computer Science (ABET-accredited)
3–7+ years of experience in cloud engineering, automation, or DevOps
Certifications/training per DoD 8570.1M / 8140 (Security+, CISSP, Network+ CE)
Hands-on experience with GitLab CI, CloudWatch, Python/Bash
Desired: AWS Certifications (DevOps Engineer Professional, Solutions Architect Professional), ITIL or PMP
